Judy Prodan
Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Painting is poetry that is seen instead of felt and poetry is a painting that is felt instead of seen”.
Hello, my name is Judy Prodan, and I am a visual artist born in Tasmania. I have been painting for over 40 years and studied at the old Hobart TAFE participating in sketching and oil painting classes when my children were little as well as juggling a busy job.
My artwork is a combination of observation, exploration, and imagination and like many I am attracted to art that has soul—something that has the capacity to experience a strong emotion. My representations are varied but in general reflect my background, experiences, and the place that I am in. I paint something that I really like the look of, something that strikes an aesthetic chord using watercolour or acrylic, but am equally comfortable to explore a blend of different media or materials.
I enjoy working in en plein air and am a member of two groups who sketch scenery in and around Hobart. Many of my images are informed by en plein air but in recent times I also use a digital camera which allows me to see instantly what is possible and to reveal atmospheric effects like moving cloud shadows over the landscape.
In many aspects of my artwork, I have been inspired by Clarice Beckett who is an Australian tonalism artist. Clarice was known for her subtle, misty landscapes of Melbourne and suburbs. Her creativeness and influence upon me are portrayed in my Cornelian Bay painting for which I was awarded a prize in the Rotary Charity Art Prize 2022.
In my recent works I am very much at home capturing Hobart and its historic buildings, its harbour, with the array of watercraft, but especially Salamanca Place and its rows of sandstone buildings with their intricate interplay of light and shadow, colour, and texture.
